#401 Project All the Train stations in the Netherlands 17 Kerkrade Centrum

Image
Kerkrade Centrum Right off the train station, the Cube Design Museum is a delight to visit one of my favourites in Limburg - full of inspiration. In the same complex, a stone's throw from the station you can find the Continuum Discovery Center and the Columbus Earth Center. A short walk away the center is full of plaques and monuments to showcase the more recent history (mining history) as well as WWII ( walking tour map here ). But if these types of things are not for you - the area has gardens, parks, old castles, a Zoo so plenty to keep you busy on a sunny or rainy day.

Chevremont A lot of speed demons on the roads is mostly what I recall from walking around Chevremont . From the station only a few minutes walk to main street. There are some greenways in walking distance (Berenbos) and the main Park in Kerkrade- which was my direction.

Eygelshoven Markt No station house here and only a quick walk between Eygelshoven and Eygelshoven Markt.  Be sure to visit the large market that happens every Saturday.

Eygelshoven No station house and walked from this stop to the next station Eygelshoven Markt, passing the centre along the way. On Saturdays check out the large market in the square - one of the biggest in the province and the Little Church (Oude Kerkje) looking down upon the going ons.  This former coal mining town, has some nice parks ('forests') in the area so nice for some walks.

Landgraaf Bit of a walk from the station but SnowWorld and Pinkpop is the main reasons for visiting this station. At SnowWorld you will find the world's largest indoor ski run. I oped for a quick jog up those giant stairs- offered a very nice view of the area.

#401 Project All the Train stations in the Netherlands 12 Heerlen

Heerlen When I visited Heerlen the station was being rebuilt. Looks like a massive project and quite a big complex. Being an old mining town I had intended to visit the last remaining mining buildings that houses the Dutch Mine Museum, but I got sidetracked by the architecture in Heerlen and ended up on a different sort of a day out. Loved the  Glaspaleis  building and the view of the medieval church from the library creates a beautiful contrast. You can read all about this beautiful building and its history in the library within.

11. Heerlen Woonboulevard This train station services those who wish to visit the  woonbolovard  – Think IKEA, DFS and the likes. No station house, but as this project requires me to wonder around and explore I popped into IKEA for lunch :-)
